The Berthiaume Kitchen

Contemporary Kitchen

From the floor to the full-height panels, the same golden hue permeates the kitchen. Beyond the windows, the trees naturally extend this sense of wood, gently blurring the line between the interior and the forest.

Wood is one of those materials that has graced our interiors for generations. It can be found on the tables where meals linger, on the walls that retain heat during the winter, and in those homes where we still come in with cold cheeks after spending too long outside. Here too, wood brings that familiar feeling of comfort, surrounded by a calm softness that naturally slows the pace of the room.

In this kitchen designed by Ateliers Jacob, the materials interact through a shared natural palette. Ivory quartz gently brightens the space, while light wood lends an enveloping presence throughout.

The calm of the material at the heart of the kitchen

On either side of the cooking area, the doors blend seamlessly into the wood panels, allowing the large, light-coloured surfaces to extend uninterrupted all the way to the ceiling. One door discreetly leads to the walk-in pantry, while the other opens onto the built-in refrigerator.

The vertical grain naturally draws the eye upward and reinforces the architectural presence of the space. The natural rhythm of the grain evokes a soothing sense of continuity. The cabinets seem to become an extension of the architecture itself.

Even the more technical elements disappear into this continuity of materials. Behind the wood-paneled surfaces, the range hood becomes almost invisible, preserving a natural harmony. The kitchen gently conceals its functionality behind clean lines, creating a smoother transition into the living areas.

This sense of fluidity extends all the way to the open niche. A true breath of fresh air at the heart of the integrated surfaces, this architectural alcove gently breaks up the linearity of the full-height panels, while the texture of the wood brings depth and warmth.

A barista corner overlooking nature

Set slightly back from the prep area, the barista corner sits near the large windows. Designed as a quiet pause within the kitchen, this coffee corner brings together everyday objects in a minimalist arrangement.

Nearby, seating areas soak up the morning sun. The large windows align with circadian design, an approach that seeks to create spaces in harmony with the body’s natural rhythm and the changing light throughout the day. In the morning, exposure to natural light gently helps the body wake up.

Beyond the windows, the foliage filters the morning light, slowly warming the interior. Facing the trees swaying gently in the breeze, a café au lait in hand, the day begins more slowly, carried by a sense of calm and presence.

A kitchen that embraces natural light

By grouping the cabinets and countertops along two walls, the L-shaped layout leaves plenty of room for light and the outdoor scenery. The large windows open the kitchen wide to the forest, which remains visible even from the island. First thing in the morning, the sun gently pours into the room, illuminating the light-coloured surfaces while the trees sway slowly beyond the glass.

Facing the windows, meals are prepared with a view of nature. Even when the house is silent, the forest continues to inhabit the room. While the more technical elements disappear into the built-in panels, the kitchen keeps a calm and open atmosphere, carried by the light, the air, and the surrounding landscape.
